Lon Spurgeon
Lon showed an early interest in music. His parents have pictures of him holding his Dad's guitar when he was two or three years old. It wasn't until Lon turned ten that he began his formal training in the form of band classes at school and guitar lessons from a neighbor. Years later Lon can recall the excitement of when his dad asked him if he wanted to take guitar lessons. Lon played saxaphone in school until he graduated in '85. Although he doesn't play the saxaphone anymore, a guitar has never been far from Lon's hands since he began playing so long ago.
In the years following college at UT, Lon began to broaden his musical experience, composing and recording electronic music with Jeremy and also playing electric guitar with Jeremy and his brother Eric in a folk rock group. "Those were good days", Lon recalls. "I grew a lot as a musician and got to enjoy the commeraderie and excitement of playing live rock music".
These days Lon has turned his attention to more traditional music genres. He still composes and records electronic-ambient music, but most of his time is spent playing bluegrass, folk, and classic country, acoustic style. In addition to flat pickin' and Carter pickin' on his Martin, Lon is busy working on the fiddle and singing. "I have really fallen in love with this style of music", he enthuses. "There is the great tradition behind it going back many years, there is the great sense of community and sharing among musicians who play it, and also there is the great freedom to play anywhere and to arrange your own renditions and solos." Lon hopes to continue playing roots music with his long time music partner Jeremy for a long time to come.
